The Sappi story
We were founded on 17th December 1936 in South Africa. And began as ‘South African Pulp and Paper Industries Limited’, producing paper from straw at our first mill in Johannesburg.
Over the years, we evolved beyond our origins. As did our name. And expanded internationally, diversifying our products to serve customers in over 150 countries.
Moving beyond graphic paper, we soon became the world’s leading producer of dissolving, high-yield and kraft pulp – key materials in the textile and fibre industries.
We strengthened our presence in packaging and speciality paper markets. Offering innovative solutions for labels and self-adhesive, paperboard, containerboard, flexible packaging, silicone base paper, synthetic leather production. And much more.
Today, we’re a proud market leader in nanocellulose production. Driving innovation in biomaterials - biochemicals, fibrillated cellulose and lignin - and renewable energy that supports and champions a zero-carbon circular economy
