About Gratkorn Mill

Sitting on the banks of the River Mur in Graz, Austria, our Gratkorn Mill creates the finest quality papers using the very latest technology.

Premium magazines, catalogues, books and high-end advertising are printed around the world on the approximately 860,000 tons of graphic paper produced annually at Gratkorn. The mill also produces around 90,000 tons of label papers used for bottles, tins, jars and cans.

The mill is one of the largest employers in the region, boasting a highly skilled workforce and several well-regarded apprenticeship programmes. At Gratkorn Mill, we pride ourselves on giving back to the local community in valuable ways ā€“ not least through a district heating scheme that provides waste heat to more than 22,500 local households.

Continuous improvement of our sustainability and environmental credentials is a cornerstone of our mill strategy. Over the past few years a multi-million-euro modernisation project has been undergoing, initially converting the power plant boiler to run wholly on biomass and natural gas, and in its latest stage focusing on increasing capacity for the delivery, handling and processing of biomass to feed the boiler. The project is scheduled to be completed by mid-2025, and a CO2 reduction of 55% is expected by project completion.

More about the mill

The coating process at Gratkorn Mill is designed to provide papers with a visually outstanding surface and superb printing properties. These multi-coated papers are available in gloss, silk and matt finishes, and range from 65 to 350 g/m2

Coated papers from Gratkorn are used mainly in high-gloss advertising for brochures and leaflets, as well as for art catalogues, books, magazines, annual reports, calendars and more. Theyā€™re the papers of choice where the highest print quality and outstanding colour reproduction are non-negotiable, and where superior results are required in die-cutting, embossing, dispersion and UV-varnishing or laminating.

Meanwhile the premium-quality label papers produced at the mill ā€“ with their best-in-class brightness and superb printing and metallisation performance ā€“ are used by brands across the continent who seek outstanding on-shelf impact and instant brand recognition.

Our company-wide commitment to safety is embodied in the slogan ā€œSafety Starts With Meā€ ā€“ and exemplified by the fact that we achieved one million hours without a lost time injury at the mill in 2024.

This achievement brought recognition in the form of a Gold Award for outstanding safety performance ā€“ and was made possible only by the dedication and vigilance of all our mill employees in maintaining the mindset to avoid incidents.

We are proud of our commitment and for setting new standards in workplace safety, and will always remain vigilant and mindful that ā€œSafety Starts With Me!ā€

    Caring for the environment

    Moving to renewable fuels

Using state-of-the-art technology, the recently modernised multi-fuel boiler at Gratkorn is now fuelled by natural gas and biomass, with the ultimate aim being to fully transition to biomass. Project BioFit, as the three-year renewable energy project is called, saw its latest milestone reached in September 2024 with the introduction of a conveyor system to transport biomass from the millā€™s woodyard into newly constructed storage silos.

    Water treatment that generates energy

Gratkorn has its own water treatment plant. One of the largest in Austria, it treats wastewater from the mill and surrounding communities, with around 50,000 cubic metres of wastewater being treated every day. The sewage sludge produced during treatment is subsequently burned in a combined heat and power plant.

    Sustainable sourcing

All wood used in the mill comes from sustainably managed forests, helping to ensure that forests can thrive for future generations.

    Hydroelectric power

Gratkornā€™s newly renovated onsite hydroelectric power plant is a key element of its commitment to the increased use of renewable energy.
