    Sustainability at the Somerset Mill

At the Somerset Mill, we use every part of the tree to make every day more sustainable. Our high-quality packaging, speciality, and graphic papers, and pulp are innovative solutions for a world in transition. See how sustainability is at the heart of everything we do and make.

    Powered by renewables

The Somerset Mill generates approximately 74% of its energy from renewable resources instead of carbon-emitting fossil fuels. Renewable energy such as steam and black liquor comes from pulping processes while others are purchased such as biomass. Today, the Somerset Mill has one of the smallest carbon footprints among our domestic competition.

    Conserving the Kennebec River

Water from the nearby Kennebec River helps to propel our papermaking at the Somerset Mill. From generating steam for use in the papermaking processes to on-site power generation, river water is used in all major manufacturing stages. The mill uses Elemental Chlorine Free (ECF) bleaching, which is considered by the EPA to be the Best Available Control Technology. All water is treated on site and 93% we use is returned and treated with care.  We manage our use and discharge of water in accordance with comprehensive environmental permits, meeting or exceeding all state and federal regulations.

    Recovering more chemicals

We’ve made major investments in our chemical recovery system at the Somerset Mill, including $8.5 million in the chemical recovery boiler and $19.5 million in the lime kiln. These investments enable higher process efficiencies, reduced air emissions, improved safety and lower operating costs for the mill.

    Certifications for Somerset Mill

Our certifications ensure that our performance is monitored and that our operations comply with global best practice across a range of environmental, safety and quality topics.
