The Sappi story
We were founded on December 17, 1936 in South Africa as ‘South African Pulp and Paper Industries Limited’, producing paper from straw at our first mill in Johannesburg.
Over the years, we evolved beyond our origins and expanded internationally, becoming a leader in coated paper and diversifying our products to serve customers in over 150 countries.
Moving beyond graphic paper, we also became a leading producer of dissolving wood pulp – a key raw materials in the textile industry. We also produce kraft and high yield pulp for paper and packaging applications.
In recent years, we have strengthened our presence in the packaging and specialty paper markets, offering innovative solutions for labels and self-adhesive, paperboard, containerboard, flexible packaging, silicone base paper, synthetic leather production and much more.
Today, we’re a proud market leader in nanocellulose production. Driving innovation in biomaterials - biochemicals, fibrillated cellulose and lignin - and renewable energy that supports and champions a zero-carbon circular economy.
